October news
Local mission - Caledonia Food Pantry
Global mission - RRRS
RRRS
Rochester Refugee Resettlement Service (RRRS) is our global mission.
Located on Lexington Avenue in Rochester, NY, the RRRS is servicing about 500 refugees in the area. Within the coming year, they expect about 1,000 more refugees.
Many refugees arrive with just the clothing on their backs.
The first priority for RRRS is to find them shelter. Fortunately, RRRS has about 75 houses to use in the Lexington area.
Next comes finding a job. Several companies in that area work with RRRS.
Then the refugees need to learn English. RRRS has a class room where English is taught 3 times a week. The companies they work with also offer English lessons.
Children learn English fairly quickly in school, but their parents seem to struggle. The family is fortunate if they have an English speaking child that can translate for them!
A program is being created for folks from the Caledonia First Presbyterian Church to visit with refugee ladies via Zoom. This will give the refugee ladies some practice with their English pronunciations and more confidence to use their English in public.
Our church folks had a fundraiser to help purchase boots for the school-aged children, because most of the refugees wear sandals now. We look forward to continuing our mission work with RRRS in the future.

Theme
Do not be afraid to take a stand or speak out when something is not right! OR are we too frightened of retaliation? What do we do with our anger about violence and injustice? Do we just stick our heads in the sand? Are we so assaulted with negativity by the media that we turn numb and do nothing? What do we do with these troubling questions?

Mission
