SPECIAL CONCERTS

During the year, a number of special music concerts are held at First Presbyterian Church.

These include:

Celtic Christmas Concerts

Held the first Friday in December as part of Caledonia’s Hometown Holidays. This popular program celebrates the Celtic ancestry of Livingston County through music featuring the Christmas Ceilidh Band playing smallpipes, Celtic harp, Irish flute, guitar, mandolin, whistles, bagpipes, fiddle, Celtic Bouzouki, cello, percussion and multi-voice harmonies.

Striking Strings Hammered Dulcimer Ensemble

Presents music drawn from Celtic, primarily Irish, traditions on the second Friday of March (near St. Patrick’s Day). Striking Strings includes 20 individuals led by Mitzie Collins and based at the Eastman School of Music's Community Music School. It is the largest hammered dulcimer ensemble in the US, and also includes fiddle, bass, accordian, recorder, flute/pennywhistle and guitar players, providing well-rounded music. In recent years, these concerts have included Harmonious Harps, an ensemble of student harpists from the studio of Roxanne Ziegler.

Dady Brothers Concert

Held in May each year. Joe and John Dady are well known and loved in Western NYS for their traditional Irish music, as well as for more modern bluegrass, country and folk music, much of which they have written and recorded themselves. The brothers are virtuoso players on fiddle, mandolin, guitar, bodhran, banjo, uilleann pipes, harmonica, and penny whistle, as well as being smooth vocal singers.

Additionally, the church has also hosted organ recitals on its 1870’s E. and G.G. Hook and Hastings Organ. These recitals have included several members of the Rochester Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (Lamb Organ Recitals during the 1990s), Eastman organ student recitals in 2008-2009, and most recently, on the 25th anniversary of the installation of the organ at First Presbyterian, nationally-renowned organist Peter DuBois, music director of Third Presbyterian Church in Rochester, NY.
